Inclement Weather

Canceling the sale today, I figure if I can’t get out of my driveway probably no one else can get there anyway. It’s too early to go ask my neighbors to use their snow blower, but in a bit my husband and sons will get up and clear the driveway so we can get out. The forecast was close to 10 inches yesterday but I don’t think we got that much, it’s more like 7-8 inches. Driving home yesterday was a nightmare, but the snow plows were out full force. I’m hoping to get the book store by afternoon if conditions aren’t too bad.

So When Is Texture Bookstore Gonna Open??

I’ve pushed back the opening for yet another month.

I had to get a job.

Two jobs, actually, one is at an in-bound call center; the other is a contract editing job I can work at home. you can read more about it here.

In a way I’m kinda bummed about the jobs because I wanted so very very much to work at Texture full-time, but that is simply not a sound financial move right now. I know I could get loans and stuff but that route is the road to doom for me, at least until I learn to handle my money. One of my favorite indie bookstores in Cleveland had to close this summer, the owner was heavily in debt and couldn’t keep it going anymore. He’s 60 or close to it and now has to find a job. That really scared me…it’s one thing to be 36 and scrounging, it’s another to be 60 and in that position. So I’ve had to really think about what would be best for me, my family, and our finances at this time…and that would be to have the bookstore open weekends for now (Fri, Sat, Sun). I have a couple friends who can hang out (for free!) and man the store all day Fridays, since I have to work. Then Sats & Suns I’ll be there.

Busted Ankle, Family Issues, Opening Delayed

Ankle Not So Bad June 27th 2008

I twisted up my ankle pretty bad a few weeks ago. It was so slow to heal I went to two bone doctors, one said it was a hairline fracture and I needed a cast. The other said it was just a grade two sprain and all I need to do is wear a brace for the next two weeks. It kinda sucks and I think I made things worse by stomping about on my ankle when it first happened, ignoring the pain. Oh well. That combined with some family issues has me delaying the soft opening of Texture to July 18th. It’s still gonna rock! There is just still so much to do and I don’t want to be hobbling around trying to get everything ready, and not being able to be up and about like I want to.

365 Day 9: Tired Trula June 2nd 2008

I am a TIRED Trula today y’all. Today was really productive but incredibly draining. This whole week is going to be busy, lots of work. Lots of doing stuff for the bookstore, lots of writing work. Being stuck on the computer working for hours like I was in this pic, which I detest.

I was feeling sorry for myself and resentful of all I have to do…but quickly got over playing poor pitiful me because this is what I have chosen. This is what I want to do. I can do it!

Year of the Rat

I just recently celebrated my 36th birthday (um it was yesterday) and I am especially happy about this birthday because 2008 is the Year of the Rat. What does this mean for me? Well the Chinese year signs are on a 12 year cycle. Every Rat year so far has been awesome for me, with me completing a long-yearned for goal. The year I was 12 was the culmination of something very important to me, and the year I was 24 I fell in love with and started dating my husband. So I am hopeful that this year, age 36, will keep up the trend of awesome Rat years in my life. My big goal this year is opening Texture!

Shut Down – AGAIN

The owner of the storefront I’m renting just gave me some story about deciding to sell the building all of a sudden, what in the underworld? He totally refunded my deposit including money for stuff I bought for repairs, but I am devastated. I was planning to open next month part-time and then have a full scale launch in December. Now I have to start all over again with finding a place and getting organized there and all. Good thing I had yet to get business cards printed up with the address, that was something I planned to do this week. ha.

I will not give up on this goal, I will find a great storefront, and I will make this happen. I feel sad but that will pass, I’m not going to get all bent out of shape about this because it’s just not that big a deal. I just need to find another storefront, keep it moving. Your well-wishes will be appreciated though!

Issues With Independent Bookstores

I thought this was interesting:

American supporters of independent bookstores, such as the American Booksellers Association are often critical of corporate booksellers like Barnes & Noble and Borders Books and Music (the #1 and #2 book retailers in the U.S. as of 2005). They criticize these chain stores for dominating the bookselling industry with their large stores, discount marketing, and sales of non-book materials like CDs and DVDs.

The aggressive growth and marketing efforts of such chains are often blamed for driving independent bookstores out of business. Independent bookstores also face competition from mass merchants and discount department stores like Wal-Mart, Target Corporation and Kmart, as well as from smaller retailers like grocery and drug store chains.

Online bookstores

Some independent booksellers have begun to sell books online to compete with Web-based booksellers like Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com. For example, the American Booksellers Association’s Book Sense program features a website (booksense.com) allowing independent bookstores to participate in a common virtual online storefront. Others, such as Powell’s Books, had a web presence before Amazon.com.

Bookstore Tourism

Bookstore tourism, a grassroots effort and marketing tool initiated in the U.S. in 2003, is aimed at raising the visibility of independent bookstores by promoting them as a group travel niche.

Lost Pics & Renovation

I wanted to post pics of the renovation process but I lost them during an upload from my phone. It’s just as well, it’s taking forever for me to get this done. Part of me wishes I had the money to hire people to do this for me but part of me is so happy to be able to do this; to have this great opportunity at seizing my dream, I am just thrilled. My friend Tony is going part-time at his job and said he’d help me with the store, and so is my friend Angela.

I’m working a full-time job, I’m telecommuting from home which is great! because I can get the kids off to school and be home when they get done. I love the job and plan to work it for a while because the store is going to be in the red for a few years. But it is full-time and basically I just have a few hours during the morning to work on store stuff, and one weekend day. My husband works full-time too, he’s a teacher, and doesn’t have a lot of time during the week to help out. I have every confidence though, it will all work out!

I won’t be able to do any work on the store until this Saturday, I will definitely take more pics and post them.

Why Do I Want to Open a Bookstore?

I wonder sometimes. It’s so trying and complicated getting everything together. Sometimes I wonder if it is even worth it. Then I remember how much I love books and how this will make me feel…this is one of my dreams, and I know I can make it come true.

I have always loved books, from as long as I can remember. I started reading when I was very young and books were a solace to me. Then there is the buying, the acquiring of books, the anticipation of the story or the information; that’s all a part of my desire to have my own book store. The contact with other people who also love books, the sharing of excitement about books is all a part of it. Also a part, is the wish to recreate the magical feeling books can spark in me. My store will be a place of magic where the secret that lies in each book will wait to be discovered by it’s buyer.
